OpenEPC 5 already included a separation of control and user plane in 2013 using OpenFlow 1.4.0 with extensions. This is the predecessor of 3GPP CUPS working item (2016) implemented as an innovation of the OpenEPC team way ahead of the standards.
Learning from our SDN experience and with the input of our partners and customers, OpenEPC features today go beyond the OpenFlow implementation; to support a Gateway control plane function (5G keyword is SMF: Session Management Function) that is able to interact with an SDN Controller using the SDN Controller’s NorthBound API.
This is again a major innovation of the OpenEPC team way ahead of the standardization and that makes the integration of EPC and SDN much realistic and pragmatic than 3GPP CUPS and other efforts of the industry.
