OpenEPC has been delivered as a virtualized environment since 2009; that didn’t mean that it was NFV-ready in 2009. NFV is a complex set of standards that defines a model and framework of managing telecommunications infrastructure. As part of OpenEPC 7 there are features specific for supporting NFV deployments:
- Verified integration with OpenStack
- Lifecycle management with Open Source VNFMs like OpenBaton and Tacker
- Service Orchestration with Open Source NFVSO like OpenBaton
OpenEPC includes templates, scripts and descriptors to ease deployment and management in NFV compliant environments.
Beyond NFV OpenEPC software architecture already provides cloud-native capabilities for example its intrinsic horizontal scaling capabilities, functional decomposition, quasi-stateless design of functions with external service for stateful behavior etc.
